It all started with a fountain...

Sakteistan began in a derelict fountain in Kabul, Afganistan, in 2007, and has since grown to give at-risk youth all over the world the spaces & resources they need to learn, play & shape their futures.

Today Skateistan operates in 30+ locations, reaching over 6,000 youth per week with 54% being girls.

The majestic Mazateca mountain range, rising above 2000 masl, is home to the indigenous Mazatecos, who cultivate coffee using ancestral, chemical-free methods within an agroforestry system. Ensambles has established a regional operation here to purchase parchment directly from smallholders while offering technical support. A deep cultural tradition in La Mazateca is the Huehuentones celebration, where "huehuenton" (an old soul dressed as the Sun) dances among the living. During the Week of the Dead, people wear wooden masks, leather pants, and hay hats to invite the souls of the departed to join in the festivities.
