Getaneh Girma grows coffee on his 4-hectare farm in Idido, Yirgacheffe, a district in Ethiopia's Sidamo region, renowned as one of coffee's 'birth regions.' Yirgacheffe is famous for its washed coffees, often considered a distinct micro-region. The majority of coffee grown here consists of local landrace or Ethiopian heirloom varieties, along with some developed by the Jimma Agricultural Research Centre (JARC), which focuses on disease-resistant, high-yielding varieties without sacrificing quality. Most Yirgacheffe farmers, who typically farm less than 5 hectares, use traditional methods, growing coffee alongside other food crops in integrated 'coffee gardens.'
